Understanding Diabetes
Diabetes is a common condition that affects how your body turns food into energy.
While many people are aware of diabetes, there’s often confusion about its different types and how it impacts your health.
The pancreas, an organ near your liver and stomach, plays a crucial role in diabetes. It produces insulin, a hormone that helps your body use glucose (sugar) for energy.
Types of Diabetes
There are two main types of diabetes:
- Type 1 diabetes: This autoimmune condition occurs when the pancreas doesn’t produce enough insulin. It often develops in childhood or adolescence and isn’t linked to lifestyle factors.
- Type 2 diabetes: This is the most common type, often associated with being overweight, inactive, or having a family history of diabetes. It occurs when your body doesn’t use insulin properly (insulin resistance).
Diabetes Symptoms
Diabetes often develops gradually without noticeable symptoms. However, some common signs include:
- Increased thirst and urination
- Fatigue
- Blurred vision
- Slow-healing sores
- Frequent infections
Risk Factors for Type 2 Diabetes
Several factors can increase your risk of developing type 2 diabetes:
- Being overweight or obese
- Physical inactivity
- Family history of diabetes
- High blood pressure
- High cholesterol
- Age (over 45)
- Certain ethnicities (such as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, South Asian, African, and Middle Eastern backgrounds)
Diabetes and Your Health
Untreated diabetes can lead to serious health complications, including:
- Heart disease
- Stroke
- Kidney disease
- Nerve damage (neuropathy)
- Eye problems (retinopathy)
- Amputations

Seriously, the worst medical centre. It shouldn’t be called Friendly Medical at all.Posted on Google Aaron Curwen-WalkerTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Disgraceful experience at this practice. I had been in a high speed motor vehicle accident and was initially handed to an intern who had no clue about what pain meds I needed. Due to her ineptness, Dr Albarki had to take over and was rude, unsympathetic and never took my significant injuries seriously. And worse, he seemed to think I was faking my pain all just to get painkillers!
